ROCK STARS AND OTHER CELEBRITIES
RR Rock Stars and other celebrities
In the late ‘60s I frequently went to rock concerts—at the Fillmore East, Madison Square Garden, even Lincoln Center—to photograph various musicians, including Joe Cocker, the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton (with Delaney and Bonnie), the Jefferson Airplane, the Rolling Stones, and the Who, among others.
At the same time I also had the great good fortune to have a friend, the late Robin Richman, who worked in the entertainment department at LIFE and who introduced me to many of the important musicians of the day, whom I was able to meet and photograph backstage and in other performing and non-performing situations.
I also did freelance work for various publications—Show, LIFE, Ramparts, the Village Voice, certain underground newspapers, etc.—which brought me in contact with more musicians as well as other celebrities—Norman Mailer, Nick Ray, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, Pablo Casals, and others.
