CONTEMPLATIONS
These photographs were made mostly between the late 1960s and early 1980s. They feature people deeply absorbed in their thoughts or feelings, or by their surroundings. They reflect a range of expressions—curiosity, puzzlement, tranquility, apprehension, sadness, joy, worry, wonder. Some exhibit an aura of mystery: What’s going on here?
I have long been drawn to the way people can lose themselves in the moment. Time stands still. Something is revealed. I have been lucky that these contemplations have occurred in my presence, fortunate that the people I have photographed—many of whom I have known, others complete strangers—have been able to relax in the presence of the camera and just be, without self-consciousness or pretension. It is their gift to themselves and to me.
